It should come as no surprise by now that, like many other Android handsets lately, the OnePlus 6will have a display cut-out near the top of its panel. Ever since sister company Oppo released its R15 pair there has been little doubt about the design of the upcoming OnePlus. If that wasn't proof enough, co-founder Carl Pei, later described the notch in detail as well, stating that it will measure 19.62 x 7.69mm and that it will be "adding more screen real estate instead of taking anything away".
That reasoning was apparently insufficient for many anti-notch fans, currently voicing their disapproval and concerns. The user feedback has since been addressed by Pete Lau, who promised the OnePlus 6 will let you to decide whether to use the extra screen real estate around the notch, or shrink the UI down to avoid it and leave a black bar.
The catch is that the feature won't be available to the OnePlus 6 at launch, but rather it will come with an update later on. This is hardly a surprising development, considering Google has already taken upon itself to implement display cut-out support straight into Android P.
Adding in an optional notch/aspect ratio adjustment toggle sounds like a fairly logical part of this. Potentially alleviate OnePlus and other manufacturers from the development effort altogether.
There are a couple of other bits of information to extract from this post too. For one, if anybody had any doubts that the OnePlus 6 will stick to OLED technology, the company's confidence in turning off the screen area around the notch should serve as some extra proof. Secondly, it really sounds like the next OnePlus launch is very close. OnePlus has traditionally unveiled its phones around June, but considering Pete Lau's extended feature promise, the OnePlus 6 might just arrive a bit earlier this year.
OnePlus is already teasing the device and has even confirmed some specs, including a Snapdragon 845 chipset, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB storage variant. Rumors estimate that pricing for the OnePlus 6 will start $50 higher than the MSRP of the OnePlus 5T, or around $525 for a base 64GB unit.
