More Nokia 9 cases break cover, renders show off the curved sides of the screen

The Loch Ness Monster is lucky that it doesn’t need a case, otherwise its photo will be plastered all over the news. The Nokia 9 is not so lucky – here’s another round of cases.

The render for the first really emphasizes the curve of the screen’s side while the second is more subtle, but the curvature is still plainly visible.

One detail not actually shown on these renders is the alleged dual selfie camera. Admittedly, neither of these cases cover the front so that part probably is mostlyguesswork. And of the flip cases that we found, none had any cutouts for a selfie camera.

Analyst: more Nokia phones were sold in Q4 than HTC, Sony, Google or OnePlus phones

Counterpoint has revised its numbers and now says HMD sold 4.4 million smartphones in Q4 of last year. Neil Shah, an analysts at the company, says the 1% market share puts it just outside the Top 10 – Nokia is in 11th place.

To put that in perspective, more Nokia-branded phones were sold in the last three months of 2017 than the following companies (individually):

• HTC
• Sony
• Google
• Alcatel
• Lenovo
• OnePlus
• Gionee
• Meizu
• Coolpad
• Asus

The brand is seeing a resurgence in some markets. Nokia smartphones were #3 in the UK for the quarter and in the Top 5 in Russia, Vietnam and most Middle Eastern markets. Not bad for a company that is essentially a year old at this point.

Nokia featurephone numbers were revised as well. The company took the top spot in Q4 with 20.7 million units sold and considering the total phone market (smart + feature phones), HMD is in 6th place (with a 5% share of the overall market).

Nokia sales grew throughout 2017, reached a total of 8.45 million units

HMD took it slow when it resurrected the Nokia brand. It initially launched the Nokia 6 in China and managed to sell 100,000 units in the first quarter (per IDC numbers). Its confidence grew and expanded to more regions and introduced more models.

Q2 saw the introduction of the Nokia 5 and 3. Sales jumped up significantly as those two (along with the 6) went on the international market – New Nokias don’t seem to do well in China.

The number of smartphones sold per quarter kept growing and in the last three months of 2017, HMD had a 1% share of global smartphone sales - a total of 8.45 million units - according toCounterpoint Research.

But HMD also controls the Nokia brand on the feature phone side of things. In Q3, it moved 13.5 million feature phones. In Q4, it got into the Top 5 in India in the feature phone segment.

HMD has not released an official report on its sales so all these figures are estimates by analysts.

HMD trademarks "Asha", Nokia's former feature phone line

HMD just trademarked “Asha” with the EU Intellectual Property Office. Nokia Asha phones, for those who don’t remember them, were a lineup of feature phones that often featured a touchscreen and a focus on online services – Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp.

Asha phones offered smartphone-like functionality at a time when actual smartphones were too pricey. That made them a key element of Nokia’s “next billion” plan. We don’t think that HMD will go the feature phone route, however. For one, the new application specifically mentions that “Asha” can be used for smartphones.

Also Google and Micromax are even planning a $32 Android Go phone, so price is no longer an argument. HMD itself might be working on an Android Go phone, the Nokia 1. So the new Nokia Asha lineup may be home to low-cost Android Go handsets with a dose of nostalgia.

This might be the Nokia 1, an Android Go phone

This might be the first glimpse of the Nokia 1, key word being might. The device is rumored to be the most affordable smartphone in HMD’s line-up, with a price of around $95/€80 and a launch date somewhere in March.

Rumors make it sound pretty similar to the Nokia 2 with a 720p IPS screen and modest memory capacity, 1GB of RAM and 8GB storage. A metal frame and polycarbonate body hark back to the Nokia glory days.

  
Potential Nokia 1 leak

Interestingly, the Nokia 1 is reported to run Android Go, the lighter version of the mobile OS that is optimized for low-power devices. The Nokia 2 runs full Android.

The two leaked images show noticeably different designs – either HMD is still exploring options or at least one of these shows something else. If this is real, the unveiling should be at the MWC so you’ll need to have some patience.

Second generation Nokia 6 debuts with Snapdragon 630

Today HMD officially took the wraps off its second generation Nokia 6 smartphone. It comes with a more capable chipset and a reduced footprint, but otherwise shares most of its hardware with the original Nokia 6.

The second gen Nokia 6 or Nokia 6 (2018), if you will, is built around a 5.5” IPS LCD of 16:9 aspect and FullHD resolution and sport a Snapdragon 630 with 2.2GHz octa-core CPU and 4GB of RAM. The screen is protected by a sheet of Corning Gorilla Glass 3.

The operating system version is still Android 7.1 Nougat, but a quick update to 8.0 Oreo is promised to bring the new Nokia 6 up to speed.

The phone switches to the newer USB-C standard for data connection and charging of its 3,000 mAh battery. but has the same camera pair as its predecessor. This means the Second gen Nokia 6 has a single 16MP camera with 1.0um pixels and F/2.0 lens at the back and an 8MP shooter with 1.12um pixels and F/2.2 aperture at the front.

A microSD card slot lets you extend the available storage, which is 32GB or 64GB depending on the version you purchase. There’s a single speaker on board, but the 3.5mm audio is also here to stay.

The final major change the Nokia 6 (2018) brings is the fingerprint sensor, which has moved to the back to help reduce the footprint of the phone. As a result the second gen Nokia 6 measures 148.8 x 75.8 x 8.15mm (8.6mm thick at the camera), which more is than 5mm shorter than the original one.

The second-gen Nokia 6 is available for pre-order in Black and Silver color options for CNY1,499 ($230/£170/€190) for the 32GB version, while the 64GB one costs CNY1,699($260/£190/€215). Actual sales begin on January 10.

APK tear-down of Nokia's Camera app reveals Nokia 4 and Nokia 7 Plus monikers

APK tear-down of Nokia's Camera app (version 8.0210.20, installed on a Nokia 5 running Android Oreo beta) has revealed some interesting information, including monikers of devices that could be in the pipeline.

As clear from the following screenshot, the list of revealed devices includes names like Nokia 1, Nokia 4, Nokia 7 Plus, and Nokia 9.

While the Nokia 9 has already been the subject of several leaks and rumors, recently, there has been a Nokia 1-related rumor as well. So the teardown effectively uncovers Nokia 4 and Nokia 7 Plus.

It's, however, worth mentioning that dates corresponding to files in the above screenshot reveal these files were created/modified in 2016. So it's difficult to say that Nokia 4 and Nokia 7 Plus will indeed see the light of day. But then again, Nokia 9 is on the list as well, and we know it's coming, so anything is possible.

Anyway, the teardown also reveals some other stuff, including features like Telephoto mode, Pro Mode, and shutter speed control. Take a look:

Nokia 3310 4G (TA-1077) spotted on TENAA, runs YunOS

The Nokia TA-1077, which received a certification in China earlier this month and is already said to be the Nokia 3310 4G, has now been spotted on TENNA. The listing also includes images of the device.

While details are scarce on the specifications front, one interesting info the listing reveals is that the handset will be powered by Yun-OS, an Android-based operating system from China's Alibaba.

No information yet on what price tag the Nokia 3310 4G will carry and when exactly it will be available.

Nokia 9 shows its bezel-starved face in leaked render

The upcoming Nokia 9 flagship smartphone has been certified by the FCC recently, which resulted in a nice list of its specs being outed earlier today. Those details are all fine and dandy, but what if you want to know what the handset is going to look like?

A helpful leak from Chinese social network Weibo can now assist you in that endeavor. This is apparently the Nokia 9, from the front.

The obvious thing to note here is the trimming of the bezels, a sign that HMD Global is finally ready to embrace the most important trend of this year - though, ironically, the Nokia 9 will probably be announced in early 2018. And although we've definitely seen even smaller top and bottom bezels, this design is a welcome change from the Nokia 8's.

Anyway, we also see what could be two front-facing cameras, and a blue metal frame. It's impossible to tell from this picture if the phone's back will be glass or metal. The Nokia 9 is expected to become official as early as January 19, though it might be unveiled later.

According to the FCC's documentation, it will have a 5.5" OLED touchscreen, a 12 MP + 13 MP dual rear camera setup, the Snapdragon 835 at the helm, 128GB of UFS 2.1 storage, and a 3,250 mAh battery with 18W fast charging. It runs Android 8.0 Oreo. The front camera is listed as 5 MP, but we assume that's the resolution employed by just one of the sensors, and not the primary one.

Nokia 9's FCC certification reveals its key specs

The Nokia 9 continues to clear wireless authorities – from 3C to the FCC. The FCC was even kind enough to post screenshots of the About screen along with a fairly detailed list of specs (buried into the RF report).

The phone will sport a 5.5" OLED panel from LG (resolution and aspect ratio unknown), HMD's first OLED screen. The chipset is this year's Snapdragon 835 and it will be running Android 8.0 Oreo. RAM is not mentioned, but the storage is a generous 128GB (UFS 2.1 sourced from Samsung).

The main shooter on the back of the Nokia 9 will be a 12MP + 13MP dual camera. The selfie camera is a surprise at a mere 5MP (the Nokia 8 has a 13MP front camera).

The final details divulged by the FCC are a 3,250mAh battery with fast charging (18W) plus some in-box items - a charger, USB cable and headphones (seemingly each sourced from one of two suppliers).

While the Nokia 9 missed the deadline for holiday shopping, there seem to be no hurdles for an early 2018 launch. Some rumors suggest this could be as early as January 19 at an event that will also bring a sequel to HMD’s first Nokia – the Nokia 6.

Nokia 5 survives scratch, burn, and bend test

The latest phone to go through the standardized scratch, burn, and bend testing performed by Zack from YouTube channel JerryRigEverything is the Nokia 5. This is definitely set towards the lower-end of the mid-range in the brand's Android smartphone portfolio, but it still comes with a full metal body and a solid-looking build. It can also be had in the intriguing Copper color version, which is the one that stars in the video embedded below.

The Nokia 5 manages to pass the test with flying colors, which means Nokia's well known propensity for creating solid devices has been left intact even after HMD Global started to develop phones bearing the brand.

The handset's main camera and LED flash, as well as the front snapper and the fingerprint sensor all sit behind glass which means you're unlikely to get them scratched easily, while the plastic bits on the top and bottom sides serve two duties: making sure cell signals pass through and possibly helping when the phone is dropped, because the corners are usually the most fragile in such a situation. And since plastic is more forgiving than metal in that case, hopefully the Nokia 5 won't be all bent out of shape when it hits the pavement.

Speaking of bending, the device doesn't do that at all in this test - not when pushed from the front, not when pushed from the back. As for the burn test, it does exactly as good as any other phone with an LCD screen - the pixels the flame is reaching will only turn black after around ten seconds. The front of the phone only scratches at level six on the Mohs scale, which is standard for devices adorned with Gorilla Glass.

Nokia camera app gets telephoto and wide-angle support ahead of Nokia 9 launch

The Oreo beta for the Nokia 5 brought a new version of Nokia’s camera app – with surprising (and hidden) new features. The camera now supports dual cameras of both the telephoto and wide-angle kind.

The app specifically shows 2x telephoto zoom, which is the standard for phones right now. The Nokia 5 can’t make use of it of course, even HMD’s only dual camera phone – the Nokia 8 – has a identical field of view on its two cameras. But this app shows what could come in the future.

So far no phone on the market does both telephoto and wide-angle. We’ve already heard the first murmurs of phones with three cameras but chances are that HMD is just considering two separate models. All Nokia 9 rumors so far point to a two-camera solution.

There’s another less exciting change to the camera app – you can now manually select Shutter speed and ISO on the Nokia 5. Values go between 1/500s and 1s for the shutter and 100 to 2,000 for ISO.

Oreo beta program for Nokia 6 and Nokia 5 to kick off soon

HMD Global's CPO Juho Sarvikas just confirmed that Oreo beta testing for the company's Nokia 6 and Nokia 5 smartphones will begin soon.

This comes shortly after the final Oreo build started rolling out to the Nokia 8, making it the first Nokia smartphone to get the new Android OS. Sadly, there's currently no information on exactly when the Nokia 5 and 6 will start receiving beta builds.

Nokia 6 global version gets November security patch

HMD’s vision for the rebirth of the Nokia brand involves stock Android and timely updates. This means the company is quick to seed a new security patch to its handsets only a few days after it’s finalized by Google. The global version of the Nokia 6 (TA-1003) has just started receiving the monthly security fixes for November.

The update comes in at 150MB and seemingly brings no other changes. With the Oreo update for the Nokia 6 coming before the end of the year we assume any new features will be coming alongside it.

Just yesterday HMD announced that the Oreo beta testing of the Nokia 8 is complete, which means that the update itself will start seeding any moment now. The Nokia 6 had no public beta program to give us a clue, but it can’t be too far behind.

Nokia 2 announced with 5-inch display, 4,100mAh battery

As expected, HMD has officially announced the entry-level Nokia 2 smartphone. The device comes with a 5-inch HD display, and is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 212 SoC.

The handset features an 8MP main camera, and a 5MP front shooter. A large 4,100mAh battery should provide outstanding battery life, given the modest chipset and screen. HMD officially quotes 2-day battery life if you use the phone for 5 hours per day.

RAM is 1GB, while internal memory is 8GB with a microSD card slot for expansion. The phone runs Android Nougat out of the box, with Oreo update confirmed to be coming. It comes in three color options: copper, black, and white.

Nokia 2 also features Google Assistant, something which the company says makes the device first of its kind in the entry-level segment. HMD said the Nokia 2 will launch in mid November, and will carry a €99 price tag.

Nokia 8 teardown shows repairs are tricky but doable

Nokia 8 already went through the grueling burn and bend tests of JerryRigEverything and lived, but what if it didn’t? How hard would it be to repair a component that broke or failed? Well, nothing like a comprehensive teardown to answer that question.

The phone is certainly well-built, but a novice will have a hell of a time trying to repair it. The first obstacle is the screen, which is glued down. Below that things are mostly held down with screws and plenty of them – 30 in total with different sizes and one standoff screw.

The copper heat pipe is interesting. It’s pretty big, but it does not go over the chipset. Instead the chipset (covered with thermal paste) transfers heat to the aluminum skeleton of the phone and then the heat goes through the aluminum to the copper.

Watch the video below to see the venerable snake nest of cables that connect the various components of the Nokia 8. Again, repairing this phone requires a lot of skill.

Nokia 9 leaks in new image; Nokia 2 gets certified in Russia

The Nokia 9 has already been the subject of several leaks and rumors so far. And now, another image for the device has leaked. Specifically, the image in question shows the back plate of phone.

As for specs, rumors so far have revealed the phone will sport a 5.50-inch AMOLED display (an 18:9 panel with QHD+ resolution). It will measure 140.9 x 72.9 x 7.5mm, although thickness would be 8.9mm if you take the camera hump into consideration.

Rumored price tag is €750, and availability is said to be set for early 2018.

Moving on, in another Nokia-related news, the Nokia 2 smartphone has been certified by regulators in Russia. Specifically, the Nokia 2 dual SIM TA-1029 has been approved for the market.

The low-end device is expected to launch in the month of November. No information on pricing yet.
