Oppo is teasing a new F7 "Selfie Expert"

The Oppo R15 and R15s have been a rather constant presence in the rumor mill these past few weeks. A new official teaser, however, brings an interesting twist to the company's upcoming lineup - the Oppo F7. This is the first time we are actually hearing anything substantial about the device and there might be a pretty good explanation for that. Looking at the poster, the next "Selfie Expert" looks almost identical in design to the R15, which is probably how it slipped under the radar.

The promotional image in question was posted on Twitter by Oppo India. It showcases the design and also teases the brand's new local ambassador - likely the cricketer Hardik Pandya. Digging deeper through the Twitter comments also yields a date - March 26, when the local announcement is likely to take place.

As far as we can gather, the Oppo F7 will feature a 6.2-inch FullHD+, 19:9 display, with an alleged screen to body ratio of 89.09 percent. Rumors also hint at a whopping 25MP sefie camera - only fitting for a "Selfie Expert", complete with AI features, similar to the Oppo F5, enhanced real-tile HDR, improved beauty mode and AR stickers.

There are no other specs clues currently available for the Oppo F7, but given its visual similarities with the R15, we are not ruling out the possibility of both being base on the upcoming Snapdragon 670 chipset, or perhaps the MediaTek Helio P6 - prime candidates to power the R15. Also, the pair of devices will likely be running Color OS 4.0, based on Android Oreo.

Oppo R15 is rumored to come with MediaTek's Helio P60 chipset

Oppo has already started teasing its upcoming R15 earlier today, and now a new rumor out of its home country of China gives us a key detail regarding its specs.

According to a source that's been reliable at times in the past, the Oppo R15 will have MediaTek's newly unveiled Helio P60 chipset at the helm. This features a CPU with four Cortex-A73 cores clocked at 2 GHz and four A53 cores also at 2 GHz. For graphics it has the Mali-G72 MP3.

From Oppo's teaser we know that the R15 will be yet another Android smartphone coming with a notch at the top of its display, a trend that's disturbingly been picking up more and more steam recently. At least it's a smaller notch than the one in the iPhone X, but then again that makes perfect sense since there isn't a miniaturized Kinect in there anyway.

Samsung stays on top with 317M shipments in 2017

International Data Corporation and Strategy Analytics published their reports on the global smartphone shipments in Q4 and the full year 2017. The data reveals that Apple shipped 77.3 million iPhones in Q4 2017, most of any other manufacturer. For the full year, Samsung held its top position, shipping more than 317 million phones.

Xiaomi impressed analysts by almost doubling its shipments - 28.1 million between October and December 2017 versus just 14.3 million for the same period in 2016.

The holiday season brought anything but smiles to manufacturers with 4 out of 5 top companies registering a decline in shipments YoY. According to Strategy Analytics, the period marked the “biggest annual fall” in smartphone history from 438 million shipments in Q4 2016 to just 400 in Q4 2017.

According to both analyst companies, one of five shipped smartphones in 2017 is a Samsung. Apple stays second with 14.7% market share, followed by Huawei and Oppo, keeping the Top 4 the same as in 2016.

Although data from Strategy Analytics and IDC differs a bit, both companies report shipments for the past 12 months of around 1,5 billion smartphones. The amount is almost the same as in 2016, revealing a massive oversaturation of the market.

Oppo A71 (2018) launches with Snapdragon 450, "AI Beauty Recognition Technology"

The Oppo A71 was quietly announced last September, but it looks like it was a short-lived model. That's because today the Oppo A71 (2018) became official in Pakistan, ahead of a probably imminent launch in India.

The A71 (2018) is very similar to its predecessor, but packs in a couple of improvements (and, oddly, 1GB less RAM). It has the same 5.2" 720p display, 16GB of expandable storage, dual-SIM functionality, 13 MP f/2.2 main camera, 5 MP f/2.4 selfie shooter, and 3,000 mAh battery as the original A71. It's even got the exact same dimensions as that, measuring 148.1 x 73.8 x 7.6 mm, and weighs the same 137g.

What's new is the Snapdragon 450 chipset, replacing the old MediaTek MT6750. Qualcomm's SoC comes with the Adreno 506 GPU and a CPU with eight Cortex-A53 cores clocked at up to 1.8 GHz, and should enable an improvement in app starting speed of 12.5% on average compared to last year's A71.

This chip is paired with 2GB of RAM in the Oppo A71 (2018), and the phone runs ColorOS 3.2 based on Android 7.1 Nougat. It's an ever so slightly newer version of the UI overlay compared to the ColorOS 3.1 featured in the original.

That means you can use Oppo's "AI Beauty Recognition Technology", which is "based on a global image database that serves as an experienced photographer, who knows your beauty and will offer the most suitable beautify effect for you", according to the official website.

The Oppo A71 (2018) will be offered in gold and black. It's priced at PKR 19,899 in Pakistan, which at the moment means $179 or €144.

Oppo A83 announced with 5.7-inch display, 13MP camera

Shortly after announcing the A75 and A75s, Oppo unveiled another smartphone. Dubbed A83, the device is powered by an SoC with octa-core 2.5GHz processor, and sports a 5.7-inch display with 720x1440 pixel resolution and 18:9 aspect ratio.

RAM is 4GB, while internal memory is 32GB. The handset features a 13MP rear camera and an 8MP front shooter. Measuring 150.5 × 73.1 × 7.7mm and weighing in at 143g, the phone runs Android 7.1 and packs in a 3,090mAh battery.

The Oppo A83 also features facial recognition technology that the company claims can unlock the device within 0.18 seconds. Color options for the handset include Champagne Gold and Black.

The phone costs CNY 1399 ($215). The phone will go on sale in China on December 29.

Oppo A75/A75s launched with 6-inch display and 20MP selfie camera

A couple of new Oppo phones have been launched. Dubbed Oppo A75 and A75s, the devices only differ in the amount of storage they offer. Specs-wise, the devices are powered by MediaTek's Helio P23 (MT6763T) SoC and sport a 6-inch display with 1080 x 2160 pixel resolution.

RAM is 4GB, while storage is 32GB in case of the A75 and 64GB in case of the A75s. The handsets feature a 16MP rear camera and a 20MP front shooter. Measuring 156.5 x 76 x 7.5mm and weighing in at 152g, they run Android 7.1 Nougat and pack in a 3,200mAh battery.

There's a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor as well. Available color options include gold and black. The devices have been released in Taiwan, where they carry a price tag of NTD 10,990 (A75) and NTD 11,990 (A75s), which currently translates into around $365 and $400, respectively.

Oppo A83 with octa-core CPU and 13MP camera clears TENAA

A new Oppo smartphone has been certified by China's TENAA. Listed as Oppo A83, the device is powered by an SoC with an octa-core, 2.5GHz processor, and sports a 5.7-inch 1440 x 720 pixel display.

RAM is 2GB, while internal memory is 16GB. The handset features a 13MP main camera and an 8MP front shooter. Measuring 150.5 x 73.1 x 7.7mm and weighing in at 143g, the phone packs in a 3,090mAh battery and runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat.

Color options for the A83 include black and gold. No information on its pricing and availability yet.

Oppo A79 debuts with 18:9 OLED display, MediaTek Helio P23

Oppo has added yet another device to the lower echelons of its portfolio dubbed A79. Its screen and design are identical to those of the R11s flagship, but the internals are far less thrilling.

The Oppo A79 is built around a 6” OLED screen with a resolution of 2180 x 1080 pixels and the taller 18:9 aspect ratio. The top and bottom bezels have been trimmed significantly, giving the mid-range device very high screen-to-body ratio.

The phone is powered by a MediaTek Helio P23 chipset with a 2.5GHz octa-core Cortex-А53 CPU and 4GB of RAM. Internal storage is 64GB, but there’s a microSD card slot for expanding that. A 3,000 mAh battery with VOOC charge support should make sure the A79 charges very quickly.

Oppo A79 comes with a pair of 16MP cameras – one at the front, the other on the back with the main difference being that the rea-mounted one has a brighter aperture – F/1.8 vs F/2.0. Below the primary camera it also offers a fingerprint scanner.

The Oppo A79 runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat with the heavy customizations of Color OS 3.2 on top. It will go on sale on December 1 for CNY2,399 ($360). China will be the first market to get it in Champagne and Black color versions. It's unclear if it will reach any other markets as, OLED screen aside, it's too similar to the F5 and might cannibalize its sales.

Oppo F5 Youth goes official with 16MP selfie camera

Oppo has launched a more affordable version of its F5 mid-ranger. Dubbed Oppo F5 Youth, it retains the 6” 18:9 display with minimal bezels and FHD+ resolution (2160x1080 pixels), but comes with a downgraded camera setup.

The Oppo F5 Youth is powered by the same MediaTek Helio P23 chipset as the regular F5, featuring an octa-core Cortex-A53 CPU and ARM Mali G71 MP2 GPU, but has its RAM reduced to 3GB. Storage is 32GB, but there’s a microSD card slot for adding to it. The memory expansion slot comes in addition to the two nano-SIM slots, so you don’t have to sacrifice the second line to get enough room for your files.

The rear camera has a 13MP sensor and F/2.2 lens, while the front one has 16MP imager and faster F/2.0 aperture. There’s an LED flash on the back, while the selfie snapper offers screen flash feature, where the screen brightness is boosted so it can illuminate your face.

Oppo F5 Youth boots Color OS 3.2, based on Android 7.1 and draws its power from a 3,200 mAh battery, matching the regular F5. It has a fingerprint sensor on the back, but also supports Face unlock.

The Oppo F5 Youth is available immediately in the Philippines in Black and Gold color options for PHP13,990 ($275).

Oppo F5 arrives with 20MP front camera with AI

After a months' worth of ads and promotions across the Philippines, the Oppo F5 is finally official.

The successor to the Oppo F3, the F5 drops the front fingerprint button for a tall 18:9 6.0-inch LCD of 1080x2160px resolution. The fingerprint scanner has been moved over to the back but if you don't care to reach for it, the Oppo F5 supports face unlock. Mind you Oppo warns that this isn't as secure as the fingerprint reader.

The cameras are the clear focus on the Oppo F5. The rear snapper is a 16MP unit with an f/1.8 aperture but the higher-resolution one is the 20MP f/2.0 unit on the front. Selfies are backed by an impressively-big 1/2.8-inch sensor, while on the software side you get AI beauty. Basically the Oppo F5 will highlight features like eyes, nose, jawline or cheekbones in selfies. The software will brighten your eyes too.

The Oppo F5 can capture Portrait Mode selfies with artificial blur too.

The Oppo F5 comes with either 32GB storage and 4GB of RAM or 64GB/6GB. The chipset isn't a huge leap forward compared to the Oppo F3 - you get a Helio P23 with eight Cortex-A53 CPU cores.

Samsung topped global smartphone shipments in Q2 2017

Samsung shipped 22.1% of all smartphones around the world in Q2 2017, maintaining its leading position in the smartphone market. This equals in 79.5 million devices or 1.9 million more than the same quarter of 2016.

Samsung recovered from the Galaxy Note7 fiasco effortlessly, with 2% rise from 77.6 million units in April-June 2016. Apple is still second, but even though it shipped more units YoY, it failed to match the overall market increase.

Huawei and Oppo are third and fourth. Huawei is got to a 10.7% share achieving 38.4 million units shipped, up from 32 million a year ago.

Oppo shipped 64% more units YoY - 29.5 million in total for an 8.2% slice of the pie.

Xiaomi came in fifth, posting an annual growth of 58% and moving 23.2 million units.

The overall market grew by 6% YoY and reached 360 million units in Q2 2017.

A new Oppo A77 appears on TENAA: faster chipset, latest Android, same cameras

You know the Oppo A77 that was announced in Taiwan on May 17? Well, there's a new one, as evidenced by two new entries on Chinese telecom regulator TENAA's website. Those detail an A77 and A77t, neither looking visually the same as the existing A77, plus there are notable differences in specs.

For starters, this new A77 runs on the latest Android 7.1.1 as opposed to 6.0 Marshmallow. TENAA doesn't name chipsets, but the octa-core processor is quoted to be clocked at 2.0GHz, where the existing model's clock frequency is 1.5GHz. So it isn't the MT6750T then, but something along the lines of a Helio P10 or a Snapdragon 625, maybe.

Other changes include a 3,115mAh battery (vs. 3,200mAh), a minor drop in weight to 148g (vs. 153g), and slightly different dimensions at 153.3 x 75.9 x 7.4mm (vs. 153.3 x 75.2 x 7.2mm). Oh, and a redesign that puts the camera and flash under the same window to resemble the dual camera setup of the R11, plus a familiar take on the antenna bands.

Things that remain unchanged include the 13MP primary cam and the 16MP selfie shooter. The new A77 also sports the same 5.5-inch FullHD LCD.

By the looks of it, the A77 certified by TENAA is the version destined for Mainland China, which apparently differs slightly from the one Taiwan is getting. It remains to be seen when it's going to become official.

Oppo R11 heading to Singapore this Thursday

The Oppo R11 has been selling in China for a few days and it has been a successful endeavor as in just 40 minutes it broke the record for first day sales (both on and off-line).

And now the R11 is coming to Singapore, set to launch on June 22, this Thursday. The press release gave no clue on the price, however. In China, it sells for CNY 3,000 (around $440) and it should start selling tomorrow in Taiwan at NTD 16,000 (around $525).

The Oppo R11 has two major features that work in harmony – a dual camera (16MP + 20MP) and the Snapdragon 660 chipset. The 16MP sensor is the Sony IMX 398 we know from the R9s and the 20MP sensor (IMX 376) handles telephoto shots.

This is the first phone with the Snapdragon 660 chipset and leverages its advanced image processing, featuring the 14-bit Spectra 160 IPS and HVX. If the latter sounds familiar, Google uses HVX for the excellent HDR+ effects on its Pixel phones.

Oppo R11 to be available outside China starting next week

The Oppo R11 - which was made official last week, and is currently only available in China - will soon be available outside of its home country. According to a Weibo post, the device will go on sale in Taiwan next week.

Specifically, the post notes the launch is set for June 21. As for pricing, the phone will carry a tag of NTD 15,990, which translates into around $525. For comparison, the R11's price in China is CNY2,999, or around $440.

Oppo R11 Plus officially unveiled: 6" AMOLED screen, 4,000mAh battery

June 5 was just a preview, now Oppo is unveiling the R11 and R11 Plus in earnest. We already saw the R11, so let’s focus on the Plus model now. Not that there’s much difference between the two.

The Oppo R11 Plus boasts a 6” display - an AMOLED panel with 1080p resolution - and a large 4,000mAh battery (complete with VOOC Flash charging). This dwarfs the 5.5” screen and 3,000mAh (still VOOC-supporting) battery of the regular R11.

Anyway, the dual camera is where it gets fun. A 16MP sensor behind a bright f/1.7 aperture is the backbone of the system, aided by a telephoto (2x magnification) 20MP camera (f/2.6). They use Sony IMX398 and IMX350 sensors respectively. These two cams, together with the Qualcomm ISP offer bokeh and portrait modes.

And you can record 4K video with either of the back cameras - wide-angle and telephoto. On the front is a capable 20MP selfie camera (f/2.0) that also supports bokeh effect.

All of this is wrapped up in a metal unibody (Oppo is a fan of this design) with concealed antenna lines. The handset measures 7.8mm thick and weighs 188g, not bad at all, given its size.
